University of Exeter
Project: Laver Data Centre
Working With: Estates Services
Project Lead: T J Adams, Scientific, Facilities & Infrastructure Systems Engineer.
Electrical Installer: Intoheat.
A world leading UK University, part of the Russel Group, offering outstanding research and teaching across four campuses in the Southwest. The Laver Data centre is situated on the main campus Streatham in Exeter, Devon.
Objective
University – refurbish the Data Centre Server Rooms with the latest safety equipment.
Works to be completed: upgrade Fire Panels, Flood Detection, Intruder & Panic Alarm Passive Fire Protection and Emergency Lighting.
P4 – Upgrade the existing emergency lighting to the P4 self-testing MESH system.
Challenges for the project
Coordinated approach with other safety equipment suppliers to work on site together during the same period.
Short window to complete project while the University could grant access to the area while students and staff were away during the December break. It was vital to have the servers operational and safe.
Process
With authorisation from the University, P4 completed the emergency lighting survey and the Scheme was approved.
A series of meetings with the University and suppliers was led by TJ Adams to confirm technical specifications and set out the tight programme of work.
On receipt of the order, the equipment was produced, delivered, installed and commissioned in an 8-week period.
Result
- Installed P4’s fully Automatic Addressable Self-Testing Lighting monitoring system with FMT wireless MESH technology and M-WEB controller.
- Ease of installation – wireless communication reduced the requirement for internal wiring, causing minimal disruption.
- M-WEB controller uploaded to the cloud where it sits with other buildings in the campus on the P4 system.
- Estates team have access to and can monitor the whole emergency lighting network from one centralised location.
- Test reports are easily accessible via the cloud dash-board.
