Case study
Dundee University
Project: Innovation Hub – New Build (Research Labs)
System Type: Wired
Project Value: £150k
Tracing its roots back to the late 1800’s Dundee University is one of the UK’s leading academic institutions. In common with most universities, it features an extensive portfolio of buildings with many specialist use areas.
The university’s diverse environment highlighted the need for a flexible emergency lighting system:
Campus Area | Challenge | Self-Test Solution Benefit |
Laboratories & Workshops | Critical environments, potentially higher fire risk, need immediate fault reporting. | Immediate visual alert for any fault, ensuring quick rectification and sustained safety compliance. |
Having existing P4 systems across campus reassured the Estates team that P4 were the right choice for their newly built Innovation Hub.
P4 worked closely with consultants and contractors to successfully deliver a system that met all the Universities requirements.
Mark Webster, Head of Electrical Services, summarises:
” We at the University if Dundee have complex environments with diverse buildings, high foot traffic, and strict safety obligations. P4’s emergency lighting systems offer a smart, compliant, and cost-effective solution tailored to these unique demands:
- P4’s Fastel automatic self-testing systems eliminate the need for manual testing across hundreds or thousands of luminaires.
- This is ideal for sprawling campuses with lecture halls, libraries, & labs where manual checks would be labour-intensive and disruptive.
- Facilities teams can monitor the entire emergency lighting network from a central location, receiving alerts for faults or maintenance needs.
- This streamlines operations and ensures rapid response in high-occupancy buildings like student unions or auditoriums.
- Automated testing and reduced maintenance labour translate into significant cost savings.”
