The University of Surrey owned multi million pound Surrey Sports Park, which offers a venue that hosts some of the best sporting facilities in the world, has been equipped with P4’s M-Web state of the art self-testing emergency lighting monitoring system.
The Sports Park, one of Europe’s premier sites for elite sport, physical activity, well-being and leisure, provides a venue that supports the ambitions of all users, regardless of ability, from world class athletes to grassroots beginners. Their safety and security are of paramount importance, and the choice of a suitable emergency lighting system was a key decision.
“Given that students and staff of the University of Surrey, independent teams and individuals, of all ages have the opportunity to excel in a place that inspires active discovery and development of sporting and creative talent, we needed to ensure that our emergency lighting system would provide the safest, most accurate and convenient remote monitoring procedure through its Local Area Network,” says Michael Harris, an electrical engineer at the University.
He added: “Our objective was also to have a system that would not be labour intensive, would prove maintenance friendly and be accurate.”
The Sports Park chose the M-Web monitoring system from P4 as the most proven, reliable, cost effective and flexible self-testing computer addressable solution for the buildings within the complex. “We had used P4 equipment in the past, ” said Michael Harris, “and had total confidence in the company’s ability to design the right scheme for us – easy to maintain, with fault reporting accurate.
“We faced some testing challenges on account of the size of the building and the amount of man hours that would be required to complete the emergency lighting tests. Another significant challenge was to get the lights correctly identified with an accurate location to ease maintenance tasks or carry out repairs efficiently.
“This is where the good working relationship with the P4 team really paid dividends. We now have an accurate, efficient and reliable system, which complies fully with statutory requirements and frees our engineers to give more time to the many other technical and maintenance tasks on the complex.”
M-Web is an ideal system for sports complexes with its unique addressable location, facility to identify a faulty fitting immediately without having to sift through all the drawings and send technicians all over the Centre to locate it. With simplified fault finding, and, because the test procedures, such as the weekly function tests and the deep discharge battery test, are fully automatic, it enables estates managers to run the maintenance operation very efficiently.
Furthermore, with FASTELink M-Web software, they receive an individual report on the performance of each fitting, and when it last did a self-test and a current status report.
The complex comprises the 700 square metre health and fitness centre, indoor 50 metre swimming pool, squash courts and multi-purpose sports halls, exercise and dance studios.
P4 has also installed its M-Web system throughout the University estate including the Senate House, Ivey Arts Centre, Duke of Kent Building, the Library and Accommodation Blocks.
